Streako/Verified vs tap-to-check
Verified streaks vs tap-to-check habit trackers
An honest look at what each approach is good at, and what it costs.
Two ways to count a streak
Most habit trackers are tap-to-check: you do the habit, then mark it done. Streako is verified: at a random moment in your daily window, you take a few quick photos and a vision model confirms you are doing the activity. This page compares the two approaches by category rather than by product, because the trade-offs are the same whichever tap-to-check app you use.
At a glance
| Tap-to-check trackers | Verified streaks (Streako) | |
|---|---|---|
| How a day counts | You mark it done. | You pass a random spot-check. |
| Effort per day | One tap, any time. | A short capture inside your window. |
| Can you fudge it? | Easily, and nobody would know. | Much harder, though not impossible. |
| Flexibility | Any habit, including ones a camera cannot see. | Only activities a camera can reasonably show. |
| Timing | Whenever suits you. | A window you set; the ping lands at a random moment inside it. |
| Privacy | Usually nothing sensitive is sent. | A few frames are sent for a check and never stored; only verdict, timestamp and confidence are kept. |
| Wrong answers | Rarely an issue, since you decide. | The model can be wrong; the check is tuned to favour you and offers one re-capture. |
Where tap-to-check is better
- It fits any habit. Meditating, drinking enough water, journaling in your head, or not doing something at all. A camera cannot see those. Verified streaks cannot cover them.
- It is frictionless. One tap is hard to beat if the habit already sticks and you only need a log.
- It collects less. Nothing about your day needs to leave your phone.
- It is available now. Streako is pre-launch, and the checks for each activity are still being benchmarked.
Where verified streaks are better
- The number means something. A streak you could have faked in one tap tells you little. A streak where every day passed a check tells you something real, including to yourself.
- It removes the quiet cheat. Most people who tap without doing the thing do not plan to. It happens on a tired evening. A random check makes that evening harder to skip past.
- It rewards showing up, not remembering to log. The ping brings you to the habit instead of relying on you to open an app.
- No audience required. There is no partner to message and no feed to perform for. The check is the accountability.
What verified streaks cost you
It would be dishonest to pretend there is no price. You have to be near your phone and able to do the activity inside the window. You give up some control: a random ping can arrive at an awkward moment. And a vision model sees only what the camera sees, so it can make mistakes. Streako is designed to prefer a wrong "yes" over a wrong "no" and to offer one re-capture before a check fails, but it is not infallible, and it has not published accuracy figures. Those will come only after the benchmark is complete.
Which should you pick?
If your habit is invisible, or you simply want a log, a tap-to-check tracker is the right tool. If your habit is something a camera can plausibly see, and you have found that self-reported streaks stop meaning anything after a few weeks, verification is worth trying. Plenty of people will want both. See self-reported vs verified habits for the longer argument, or how a Streako spot-check works.
